Abstract: | Abbott Laboratorios de Chile is a diversified pharmaceutical company headquartered in Chicago, IL. The company spread its operations to multiple locations in the Americas in the past 2 decades. The management team of the enterprise’s Chilean branch perceives the current flow of supply operations ineffective. Since there are no production plants located in Chile, they have set a goal, which is targeting the redesign of one of the least effective phases in the supply process: the processing of the imported products. Before the identification of waste in the process, the whole supply chain has been briefly examined, in order to reach a clearer understanding of Abbott’s supply operations. Once this was finished, the problematic aspects of the Processing phase have been determined trough the investigation of the two leading KPIs of the process – time and money. Statistical data has been gathered about the different cost variables of the workflow (including transport expenses and cost analysis of the external vendors responsible for processing of shipped products). Time effectiveness of various phases in the process was also examined. As a result of the preliminary investigation of the operation, Processing turned out to be a highly time ineffective and expensive step in the supply chain. As a solution, a new workflow was suggested to increase the effectiveness of the existing process. The new approach deals with the processing of the most popular goods (which are mainly nutritional products) inside Abbott’s warehousing facility, by the suggested installation of an internal production line. The new process is expected to significantly boost time effectiveness and raise flexibility rates. In order to verify the feasibility of the suggested project, a Focus Group session has been conducted with the participation of operations managers, who shared their opinion about the idea and provided useful information about e.g. required equipment and operational excellence. As a recommendation, further steps were suggested for the final implementation of the project. |
