520 3 |a Turkey is a country geographically situated on Anatolia which lies on two continents, Europe and Asia. Approximately 97% of its territory is in Asia, whereas the remaining 3% is in Europe. From this aspect, Turkey is situated on the westernmost peninsula of Asia and has been forming a bridge between Asia and Europe for thousands of years. Because of its geographical situation, the region has been home to many civilizations throughout different eras which left different political, cultural and religious influences. Before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, there existed many eastern traditions, different ethnic groups, and different traditions. The rise of nationalism and fall of the empires shattered this world. Who was the Turkish nation? With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the founder Mustafa Kemal made a series of political, legal, religious, cultural, social, and economic policy changes with the goal of converting the newly found Republic of Turkey into a secular, modern nation-state. The main core of all these reforms were actually the belief that Turkish society could turn its face to west through both political and cultural westernization in order to modernize itself. Today, the end result of these intricate developments is vague. Turkey is under the accession process to the EU with multiple domestic, geopolitical and international issues. In this research, Turkey's relation with the west, particularly with Europe and the East is investigated. Does Turkey belong to the West or to the East and if so, why? Data from the recent economic, social and political relations are used to evaluate the recent trends in this relation, in order to answer these questions. The news from various resources and institutions are incorporated in order to provide various political viewpoints as well. In fact, this question may not be concluded definitively as it is one of the hot points in the current geopolitical and international affairs. Nonetheless, the result can help us to see the future motivation that can pull EU and Turkey closer, or push even further.
