Abstract: | The COVID-19 pandemic seriously hurt the world economy, as well as the large multinational companies. It also impacted in a large scale the oil industry, so that the overall demand for oil had significantly dropped. This research paper analyzes the impact of the pandemic to one of the largest oil producers – ExxonMobil Oil Corporation. More specifically, the paper checks on how coronavirus pandemic affected the FDI strategies of ExxonMobil, how the company responded to the crisis. As an initial step, the thesis provides the theoretical background of FDI and economic crises, so that to be able to understand on what the response of the companies to such crises in the past was. The data was collected through the semi-structured interview with professionals – senior managers of ExxonMobil Hungary GBC; and with qualitative approach through the articles from reliable sources. The research paper analyzes the most important projects, where ExxonMobil invested most. It considers on which projects got the most damage due to the COVID-19 and which maintain even for the post COVID-19 period. As a result, the thesis finds out that FDI strategy of ExxonMobil has significantly changed due to the impact of the outbreak, some projects of the company have immediately been canceled, and for some of them the pandemic played a role of catalyst to finish the suspension. The paper concludes the uniqueness of the COVID-19 crisis and draws the attention to the fact, that how the major economies and corporations were not ready to such concatenation of circumstances. |
