520 3 |a CHALLENGES OF THE HUNGARIAN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN VIEW OF THE NEW CO2 EMISSION REGULATIONS The global automotive industry is going through a major paradigm shift party due to the goals set by the Paris Agreement. The path to a carbon-neutral world by 2050 is a hard and treacherous road especially for the automotive industry that has been identified as one of the key sources of greenhouse gas production. This paper aims to map out the challenges that the industry and specifically the Hungarian automotive industry is facing following the new emission regulations of the European Union. The purpose is to explore the position that this highly important player of the national economy of Hungary is in following these new regulatory changes. To answer the formulated research questions a comprehensive literature review and in-depth interviews were used with industry experts to examine the effects of Regulation (EU) 2019/631 on the European automotive industry and on the market leading Hungarian OEM Audi. The analysis was focused on the direct and indirect challenges from industrial, commercial and financial point of view. The results showed minor immediate negative effect on the Hungarian industry, but highlighted a downturn in the long-run unless necessary upgrade and investment is carried out in the upcoming years. The analysis and expert insight additionally highlighted the potential of Hungary as a regional key player in the electric vehicle battery and engine production.
