After 70 years as a centrally planned economy, Mongolia has undergone a difficult transition towards a free market system since 1990. With the help of active government promotion, the country’s industrial sector grew steadily for several decades, expanding from 7% of the national income in 1940 to 35% by 2014, as agriculture’s share of total production, declined from 79% to 27%. Mongolia’s animal husbandry is still a dominant sector of the economy, providing a major share of exports, and livestock of the raw material processed in the country’s industrial sector. Furthermore, analyzing its place based on Mongolia’s GDP should illustrate how the cashmere industry relies on the economy and living standard and more importantly should show the future prediction of its shares. Providing the prospective by defining its challenges, supply chain, price indices, and competitive advantage will show the opportunities to expand the export of raw and finished goods simultaneously. The thesis paper aims to analyze the place and prospective of the cashmere industry in Mongolia, to identify how the cashmere market influence production, trade, and consumption structure to emphasize the future opportunities to build better development of the cashmere industry. As a consequence, I will be able to define new ways of perspective that could lead to the market importing raw materials and finished goods directly internationally. This research will point to measurable benefits from improving policy and market environment for cashmere. It will examine the entire structure of cashmere in three aspects of GDP and all links involved in managing production and flow of products, services, and statistical information of price indices, trade figures from herders through end consumer of cashmere. The main focus will be to identify key areas of prospective where collaborative change can be instrumental in improving industry revenue and efficiently expanding its export while improving employment, life standard, supply.
