520 | 3 | |a The effects and consequences of the pandemic situation on the supply chain: a mixed-methods research The smooth and continuous operation of the supply chain and within that of logistics is highly essential since it largely influences every part of life. The purpose of this research is to contribute towards gaining a deeper insight and a better understanding of the changes and their effects caused by the pandemic on the operation of the supply chain, and especially dealing with the problem of limited capacities their causes and effects (in terms of containers and shipping spaces) primarily on logistics service provider companies. This paper does not seek to make predictions or to draw definite conclusions and make statements about the possible future outcomes but instead it wishes to examine the information and experiences arisen from the years of 2020 and 2021 and to compare the tendencies of a chosen company with the general trends of the observed period to obtain deeper knowledge about the unexpected changes that the field of logistics with its well-functioning systems faced. Adopting a mixed methods approach, this research inquired numerical and statistical data that was requested from the Central Statistical Office (Központi Statisztikai Hivatal) and the company of DHL Global Forwarding, and then it was supplemented with in-depth interviews asking 5 managers of different departments from the above mentioned firm to share their own experiences. After analyzing the results, the present study found that the appearance and the intensification of the bottleneck effect was significant in the forwarding industry as a result of capacity shortages including containers and shipping space, especially by the usage of ocean freight ships – and air planes connected – where opportunities were and are still limited within the area of international transportation. As a conclusion, it turned out that most companies have struggled and are struggling with transporting the ordered products on time with the least delays. Therefore, it is still challenging to uphold the smooth and continuous replenishment processes, and it is clear that the systems will need more time to recover after such a serious tribulation. | |
