520 3 |a The topic of my diploma work is the case of the Greek sovereign crisis, with special attention to the examination of the German standpoints as well. My choice of topic I can justify for several reasons. First, the studies in subjects related to the European Union have enjoyed special attention to me, and I had the opportunity before to prepare a brief analysis about the financial crisis of 2008. Moreover, since the Greek issue is really up-to-date topic and has a heavily influence on the future of the European Union, including our country’s too; I thought revealing the correlations of cause and effect is worthy. In my thesis, the studies and experiences of domestic researchers are used, adding my own thoughts and ideas. My research is descriptive, drawing conclusions from comparisons. In Europe Germany's role has always been important, and in recent years this has only increased; its central leadership positions in the European Union is undisputed. The German opinion and foreign policy is still dominant in the rest of the EU member states, even to the EU institutions. Therefore I found it worthy to involve Germany's opinion in the Greek question. It has to be considered that a country that has been previously several times in difficult situations during its history, how Germany can relate to another troubled country. It is important to mention here that Germany survived recent years’ crises easily, the economy did not break. This fact gives an excellent basis for comparison, since in this respect Greece was not so lucky in crisis management. In the first part of my dissertation the integration process of Germany and Greece will be examined. This may help to understand the importance of the German leadership, and the fact that Greece is struggling with the problems from the beginning. After that, I will reveal all the structural flaws of Greece, which contributed to reach such a serious situation in the country. By the examination of the internal reasons, Greece's entry into the eurozone will be analyzed in details regarding the fulfillment of the Maastricht criteria; with the help of charts I will highlight the size of the government deficit, the lack of foreign capital inflows and the trade balance disparities. In the external factors of the crisis the unpreparedness of the EU will be discussed. In the next chapter, I will list the elements of crisis management, both on Greek and on the EU member states’ side. So first of all I would highlight the common European response, reaction of the member countries, especially of Germany. Furthermore, regarding to the common responsibilities, the preventions created by the member states will be demonstrated such as the banking union and the fiscal compact. The ECB and the IMF solutions will be also highlighted in which the most important are the first and second rescue package for the troubled Greece. Of course, I will continue with the Greek answer and describe the reforms implemented by the Greek government, and the impact that they had in economic terms and on the Greek people. In the last chapter of my dissertation I will focus on the results of the recent years. In the past year, in 2015, many important events happened which can determine in the fate of Greece, but the eurozone’s also. I will examine the Greek government program operation on the longer term, and the achieved results. I will deal with the dissatisfaction that has characterized the Greek people in the wake of reforms and political leadership. Continuing my thoughts, the radical Syriza government will be detailed as well, which is important because the government’s campaign promises and subsequent actions went totally against the program set by the EU, the IMF and the ECB. It is essential to take a closer look on this conflict, as a result the Greek government’s actions; a third rescue package was needed to keep Greece on the surface. As my final thoughts on prospects of Greece will be discussed, visualizing what would be the effect of an announcement of sovereign default, or leaving the eurozone.
