This is because, over the years, sub-Saharan Africa continues to battle with high inflation and low Foreign Direct Investment. What causes inflation and how it impacts investment in the region is keenly debated in the literature. This study is of two folds: first, it examines the region-specific determinants of inflation in sub-Saharan Africa and second, it examines the effects of inflation on investments in the said region. Using annual data covering thirty countries in sub-Saharan Africa over a fifteen-year period, multiple regression analysis was applied to examine the determinants of inflation in the region. A simple regression model was used to examine the effects of inflation on investment in the SSA. The results showed that money supply and real exchange rates are the most influential determinants of inflation in SSA while the low inflow of Foreign Direct investments (FDIs) into the region is caused by high and usually, uncontrolled inflation in the region. With the region receiving one of the lowest FDIs, the gap in its infrastructural investment remains wide. It therefore behooves policymakers to enact responsive policies that attract foreign investments to help close this apparent investment gap in the region. | |
