This multidisciplinary study, which combines psychology, literature, art, and cultural studies, sheds new light on manga's influence in shaping attitudes of mental health. This study used a survey method to collect data from foreign manga readers, with a specific emphasis on discovering cultural differences in the perception and interpretation of mental health portrayals. Participants were asked a number of questions about their experiences with mental health issues in manga, the accuracy of these depictions, and their personal impact. The findings show that manga commonly incorporates mental health topics, and does so with a high level of narrative and creative sophistication. "Slice of life" manga was notably acclaimed for its realistic and empathic depiction of common psychological situations, whilst genres like as action and horror were occasionally criticised for oversimplifying serious topics. The accuracy with which manga reflects mental health was widely viewed as high, demonstrating manga's effectiveness in instilling more understanding and empathy for mental health issues in its viewers. This thesis emphasises manga's cultural significance in disseminating mental health information and affecting public perceptions. It suggests that manga can be used not only for pleasure, but also as an educational tool to create a better understanding of mental health issues. The findings of this study may help manga authors and publishers create stories that responsibly address mental health topics, potentially leading to more complex and accurate representations that contribute favourably to public attitudes towards mental health. The study contributes to scholarly discussions about the impact of popular culture on public health awareness, highlighting the media's power to influence social attitudes towards complicated psychological illnesses.
