| Kivonat: | The informal sector in Ghana plays a fundamental role, serving as an income and employment source for a significant portion of the populace. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) report on developing countries, the informal sector accounts for an average of 65% of employment and 30% of global output. In Ghana, over 80% of employed individuals are part of the informal sector, with approximately 55.9% being self-employed. The informal sector embodies an array of economic activities, comprising agriculture, fishing, and small-scale processing. Despites its enormous contribution to growth and development, the sector faces a number of challenges as well hold prospects for the future. Similarly, the informal sector faces misconceptions and limited exploration in literature. Not much is known on the reasons for the SMEs engagement in the sector and how best the entire economy can benefit should such businesses formalize. This paper delves into the dynamics of informal trade within the context of Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana. This study provides a conjectural groundwork for further research on the informal sector in emerging economies with similar characteristics to Ghana. Understanding the informal trade dynamics within SMEs is essential for informed policy decisions and sustainable economic development. |
