| Kivonat: | This thesis investigates the relationship between urban development and international trade, addressing which urban development factors have an impact on international trade and looking into how city-level policies facilitate this link. The study combines both quantitative analysis and case studies, by using a cross-sectional dataset for 94 countries in the year 2018, and by conducting case studies on the cities of Tangier, Gaziantep, and Changsha. The empirical findings show that the quality of trade and transport-related infrastructure which is measured by the logistics performance sub-index, along with the road network density, the percentage of urban population, and the access to public transport, are all significant and independent predictors of trade results. However, urban population growth and population density do not show the same effects. The case studies support these outcomes, showing that investments in logistics, connectivity, and urban mobility can enable cities to improve their trade results. The implications emphasize the need for the integration of strategies that aims to improve trade and transport-related infrastructure, as well as coordination of urban-trade planning. Future research can build on this study to examine longitudinal data in order to evaluate how these relationships evolve over time. Added to that, deeper analyses can give more insights into the role of local governance and city-level policies in shaping economic outcomes. |
