Description
Abstract:The digital transformation of industries accelerated in recent years with the appearance of breakthrough technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. The improving efficiency of algorithms captured the attention of the healthcare sector as well. This study aims to explore the possibilities, challenges and labor market effects of artificial intelligence in the medical field. Relevant materials were collected from scientific publications including books, journal articles, reports and conference proceedings. For primary research, deep interviews were conducted with three Hungarian companies who apply artificial intelligence in their business operations. The study revealed promising AI-based systems used in radiology, dermatology and several other domains. The relatively new phenomenon of surgical and socially assistive robots along with trends in telemedicine were also analyzed. Some legal and ethical challenges of the technology included data privacy concerns, transparency and safety issues, and algorithmic biases. Labor shortages, increasing workloads and burnouts were identified as the biggest problems of medical practitioners. Although important changes are needed in education, legislation, and product development in the future, AI has proved its worthiness to be an effective labor-supportive tool in healthcare.
