| Abstract: | This thesis explores the diverging trajectories of two underground electronic music genres: riddim dubstep and techno. It examines how social media platforms, cultural infrastructure, and industry gatekeeping have shaped the regional popularity and identity of these genres. Drawing from case studies, comparative analysis, and media content analysis, the research shows how techno in Europe retained cultural legitimacy through clubs and curatorial gatekeeping, while riddim dubstep flourished in the U.S. via digital virality and festival culture. The thesis argues that globalization, platform algorithms, and evolving scene values are central to understanding how underground music genres adapt, survive, and transform in the digital era. |
